Klunk, Shank, Shuck, Huh?
The Maze is tough. The teens that have been selected to conquer the Maze have been there for almost two years and they have no idea what to do. The teens that are trapped in the Maze are called Gladers because they live in the Glade. The Glade is similar to homebase where there is a garden, a map room, and more. It is surrounded by large walls. Outside of the large walls is the Maze.
There are about 50 people in total, 49 boys and 1 girl. Everyone in the Maze is between the age of 13 and 25, but no one knows this because they have no memory of their age, where they came from or anything, except for their name. However, even their name isn’t their real name because it is just the name the creators gave them. For two years, every month one boy or girl will arrive in the Glade, and every week new supplies will come up through the Box. To learn more about the Box please read Chapter 3. One day, a boy named Thomas arrives and everything starts to change. Things start to change even more the next day when a girl shows up in the Glade! It is so shocking because for two years there has never been a girl arrive in the Box.
The Gladers have a special words they use to describe one another, but they aren’t sweet, loving words. They are more like curse words. First there is, “klunk.” Klunk is another word for poop. For example, “He’s a klunk…”(6). This is when one of the Gladers makes fun of Thomas by saying he will never be an important person in the Glade. Another word they use is “shank.” Shank is like telling someone they are stupid or an idiot. An example from the book is, “Nice to meet ya, shank”(4). At this part in the book, one of the Gladers welcomes Thomas when he arrives. Finally, there is the word “shuck.” Shuck is a word the Gladers use if they are angry, and this word is sort of a mix of the word “klunk” and “shank.” For example, “I told ya, shuck-face…”(6), one of the Gladers shouts at Thomas, explaining that he is worthless to them.
Outside of the Glade it is dangerous and terrifying. There is a door on each of the four walls of the Glade that lead to the Maze. Every night the doors close, so the Gladers are safe from the Grievers on the outside. However, every night the Maze changes, so when the Runners, the people who scout out the Maze during the day wake up, they have a new challenge ahead of them until that pattern of the Maze repeats again later. Inside of the Maze there are eight sections, not including the Glade. Each day a Runner is assigned to a certain section to “run.” Every once in awhile someone will get stuck in the Maze overnight. No one ever survives a night in the Maze, at least, until Thomas arrives.
Now, you can see that the Maze is more than just a maze, if you know what I mean. There are 50 teens between the age of 13 and 25 that are trapped in a maze with monsters. I would be terrified if I were one of them. In the book The Maze Runner, by James Dashner, the ultimate lesson you can learn is that if you keep persevering, you will eventually accomplish your ultimate goal. Just like Thomas. I hope you have learned enough, so that if the world does get like this in the future you will be able to survive.
