Thomas vs. Minho
Which character do you think you are most like? Thomas or Minho. Well, before you decide I have some things to tell you about each character. Thomas and Minho are two very different characters in the book The Maze Runner by James Dashner. Both characters have a desire to accomplish the ultimate goal which is to solve the Maze.
By the time Thomas arrives in the Maze, Minho has already been there for almost two years. You can assume that he has more knowledge and experience with the Maze. However, Minho also has a bigger voice and is more bold than Thomas. “‘Leader?’ Minho barked a grunt that was probably supposed to be a laugh. ‘Yeah, call him leader all you want…’ He rubbed his eyes, snickering as he did so,” (81) Minho comments. Minho makes a strong remark about how Alby who isn’t much of a leader in this quote. Thomas soon starts to feel uncomfortable after Minho mentions this because he feels that Alby actually is a strong leader of the Gladers.
In this part of the book, Thomas, Minho, and Alby, who has been stung by a Griever, are stuck in the Maze overnight. Minho’s first reaction to the problem was to run for his life, but Thomas had a different view of the problem. Thomas was going to save Alby’s life even if he was going to die doing it. Dashner writes, “And then he turned and ran, disappearing in seconds, swallowed by the Maze and darkness” (118). This quote describes how Minho gave up on saving Alby very quickly, but Thomas stayed behind with Alby even though he was a “newbie” in the Maze and knew almost nothing about the Maze to help him survive the night. Thomas isn’t like Minho, Thomas will keep persevering until he accomplishes what he striving for.
Thomas and Minho have many differences, but one similarity they both have is that they want to achieve the ultimate goal which is to escape the Maze. On Thomas’s second day of training with Minho, they go to the Cliff and there they find the Griever Hole. “...he took one last look at the hidden doorway. ‘The Griever Hole’”(227) Thomas mentions. As you can see, this is one of the ways that Thomas and Minho are both striving together to accomplish the ultimate goal.
Thomas and Minho are two distinct characters in the book The Maze Runner by James Dashner, but they both have the same goal in the end. The ultimate goal is important for this book because it is constantly being elaborated on. For example, in the beginning, the Gladers only know that they have to figure a way out, but they don’t know how. However, when Thomas and Theresa arrive, they work together to find a code to use to decode the Maze. Finally, they use the code they figured out to escape and shut down the Maze. As you can see, the ultimate goal is a key point in The Maze Runner.
