Finally, a map of the maze
The reason I added this chapter was because when I was reading The Maze Runner, at times, I was confused as to where they were because the book only briefly explained the setting in the beginning. I hope the map of the Maze helps you picture what the Maze looks like more clearly.
Key Places:
The Box
When someone or something arrives in the Maze it comes up through the Box, which is a hole in the ground that has a metal box that comes up and down. “Metal ground against metal; a lurching shudder shook the floor beneath him”(1), the author describes. As you can see, a ride in the Box sounds horrific. Later, in the book, Theresa, the first and last girl to arrive in the Maze, comes up through the Box. She is special. Dark clouds roll in soon after she arrives causing the plants to die and the Doors don’t close and Grievers attack the Gladers.
The Homestead
You can probably assume that the homestead is similar to a home. The homestead acts as the home for all of the Gladers. It has a couple of bedrooms and a “hospital room.” Once everything starts to change, meaning once the girl arrives, all of the Gladers huddle inside of the homestead at night in an attempt to hide from the Grievers when they attack. But, of course that doesn’t work because they are killing machines. “The crunching and groaning and snapping of the wood became the only sounds in the world to Thomas, horrifying”(254), James Dashner describes as the Grievers climb up the walls of the Homestead.
The Cliff and the Griever Hole
This is probably the most important place in the book. It is the exit. After Thomas arrives, he becomes very eager to solve the Maze, so when Theresa arrives she has a memory of some key factors about the Maze. This helps Thomas come closer to solving the Maze, but when he goes to the Cliff with Minho, another character in the book, they find the Griever Hole (227). The Cliff is a place that looks similar to a sky full of stars, but it is an endless pit of doom. However, in the center of the Cliff there is a hole where the Grievers enter and exit the Maze called the Griever Hole. Later on in the book, Thomas figures out that the Griever Hole is an exit.
